Sue Savage gave an overview of where the project is headed. February has been focused on project development, with clear design direction resulting for all four areas. On March 9, 7-9 pm in the Library conference room, PACPAW Port Dock committee will present our designs to the Petersburg
Arts Council board. We need to have budget information and models, drawings, and other support materials at this meeting. The following week, there will be a meeting with PAC board rep, PEDC rep Liz Cabrera, and interested users of the area (USCG, Petro Marine, Harbor Board representative, USFS). We could conceivably begin ordering materials and executing designs the last week of March.
Josef says Harbor Board expressed concern about theft of the sculpture proposed for Area One. This will be addressed by the use of theft resistant screws. Is there a security camera in the Port Dock area?
Marina reported the RAC has been formed and PAC/PACPAW can apply for money for interpretive signage for the Forest Service and Coast Guard features of the site. Jeff Robinson of the USFS will probably be the contact for repainting the USFS building at the head of their floats.
Banners: Manufacturer quoted 5.5’x3’ size banners at $220 each (maximum) using original designs, with a ten day turnaround from receipt of design jpegs; recommended a “stain-glass” type of design for ease of fabrication. We are planning on 9 locations (3 on new light standards, 6 on poles along Dock Street back toward Nordic Drive, and would be ok with 3 different designs repeated. Discussion about pole fabrication, possible locations. We need to consider possible City building code requirements for visibility. Poles taller closer to the street would be interesting.
Banner design will be done thru solicitation in a community contest – Savage will put together the information including design parameters, deadlines, and get it out there to the public using the free advertising spaces offered by the Pilot, KFSK, etc. Agreed to open contest to all ages, and allow a two week time frame for submission of designs. Marina will make a mock-up of the banner size and test at the site prior to going public with contest.
Area at the Dock end of Savage will work with him as concept for this area is developed by her. Need for sensitivity to the Local Tlingit community was mentioned.
