Notes from 02-09-2010 6pm Meeting

Present: Marina Whitacker, Joef Quitslund, Chris Cotta, Emil Tucker,
Susan Christensen, Michele Pfundt, Joyce Schultz, Peter Schultz, Debi McMahon

Michele (representing PAC) spoke to the group regarding the TRT Grant request due 02-19-2010. PAC will be requesting the entire amount available ($11,271.00) with $7k for the PACPAW Centennial Sculpture project, and any remaining granted money to be given to the PACPAW Port Dock project. Susan C. will start the Port Dock project TRT grant application and forward to Josef, Marina, Chris & Sue Savage for additional input and edits, while Michele will work with Polly Lee to complete the Centennial Sculpture project application. The Port Dock grant application needs to be emailed to Michele by Feb. 16th so she has time to prepare for submission to the TRT committee by the 02-19-2010 deadline. Michele stressed the importance of having representatives of the Port Dock project at the TRT meeting on 02-25-2010. We agreed that Josef, Marina and Sue Savage would represent the project at that meeting.

Susan and Josef presented the conceptual drawing for Area One. Josef gave a rough cost estimate of $8k for metal for that portion of the project. He brought a really beautiful full-scale salmon prototype which he estimated took about a half-hour to complete.

Marina gave a report on banners. She has identified 9 locations (4 on the dock and 5 on the street) and had visuals of these. Michele brought forward Savage's idea to have the banner designs made during a possible PAC-sponsored summer fine art camp for youth. An arts education grant might be possible for this type of project. Josef suggested the banners might be fabricated by a local. There was discussion about length/width of the banners; total height of the support poles will be 12' per the engineer's design.

Chris reported that the City Council approved of paying for design of the paving of Dock Street, which might include sidewalks as well, if allowable by the EDA grant.

Josef will be meeting with the Harbor Bd. 02-10-1010 and will present the Area One conceptual drawing. Susan will make copies of the drawing, with one for Chris to give to PN&D.

Group agreed to meet again on 02-16-2010 at 6pm only if we feel it necessary in order to complete the TRT grant application. Otherwise, next meeting will be scheuduled when Sue Savage is back in Petersburg.

Respectfully submitted, Susan C.

Notes from Feb. 2, 2010 6pm Meeting

In attendance: Josef, Emil, Susan, Brian, Chris, Marina

Josef brought in more examples tonight that included samples of stainless steel, aluminum and copper. The stainless steel samples showed what heat does to give the metal different coloration. He also brought in sketches of his ideas for Area One - halibut, sea lion, fishing vessels and Devils Thumb and how they could be oriented along the guard rail including curving the forms to give a sense of depth and movement. Josef had scale models of some of the creatures as well as metal mock-ups. Ideas were thrown around about how glass could add color to the design.

Susan sketched as we talked, drawing a collaboration of some of Josef's ideas along the railing with some of her own. For next week's meeting she will provide a scale working drawing which will provide a visual for Area One and a starting point for the materials cost estimate. We can count on using some salvaged materials (oil drums for example) from the baler facility.

Susan is going to research the additional TRT money available according to the City Finance director to see how much is on the table and if PACPAW is elgible to apply for the funds.

Since last meeting, Chris talked to City Manager Scott Hahn and other City Officials about Area Three. They indicated that they would need to see some plans for the site prior to deciding how much space could be allocated in that area. Sounds like we need to give them a couple of alternatives in visual form.

Banners for Area Two and Four: Marina looked into designs at bannerart.com They are limited online, so it may be an opportunity for us to come up with our own designs. At the last meeting we talked about doing a different design for each banner. Doing 4-5 designs and the repeating as needed would significantly save production costs. Chris will get the exact lamp post design from the contractor this week. It was tentatively agreed that the banners should hang on the outboard side of the dock to reduce impacting the loading/working area of the dock. Size of banners will be determined after the lamp post configuration is known. From the plans, this group is recommending installation of four banners located on the proposed lamp posts along the dock on the USFS/Coast Guard face. The City Manager seemed to like having banners on both sides of the dock. Marina will cost this out and we can discuss as project progresses. Susan will come up with some banner designs after completing the drawing for Area One. Others interested in doing banner designs are welcome. Marina will visit the project site again and figur out how many and what sized banners will work in Area Four.

Next meeting: Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 6-7pm in the Library Conference Room
